Homemade oven baked seasoned sweet potato fries {Paleo, vegan, gluten-free, healthy}
Carbs, carbs, carbs. Carbs are by far my favorite food group (if that’s what it’s called). I normally do a decent amount of running but since this whole self-isolation/quarantine has started I’ve found myself running every single day, which means you really begin to cut into your carb storage. And what is my favorite way to replenish them, by eating lots of pasta and french fries, the healthy way.
French fries are one of my favorite things to eat because there are so many ways to prepare them. Cover them in cheese, chili, bacon, syrup ketchup, gravy or eat them plain, the options are endless. If you have never tired French fries covered in cheese and gravy, or sweet potato fries dipped in warm maple syrup, you are seriously missing out.
Since this whole pandemic started I have not been hitting the 1-84 diner like I used to every Saturday to fulfill my weekly french fry fix, so I decided to start making them at home.
Normal french fries are usually fried in oil which although is delicious in the short term, in the long term it’s not the healthiest. So, I wanted to take it upon myself to try out a few recipes with various spices and I finally landed upon this recipe which I am sharing today.
What’s so great
First, compared to normal french fries, sweet potatoes are loads healthier for you and they are a paleo food (regular potatoes are not). (Here is an article which specifically outlines the major health benefits of sweet potatoes). Second, in my opinion they taste a lot better than regular potatoes plus are way more fun to season/spice up for a healthy and nutritious meal.
How to make them
This recipe is very easy to make and there are so many options on how you can season them. If you don’t like chili powder (the second main ingredient) then you can swap it out for cinnamon, nutmeg, or even your favorite Italian spice…. One of my favorite spices to use is this one by McCormick grill – smokehouse maple seasoning. It seriously goes perfect with just about any dish, including on these sweet potato slices.
To make this recipe all you need is a handful of ingredients, all of which you will probably have in your cabinet!

Ingredients
- 3 large sweet potatoes – peeled and sliced into 1/2 cm slices or less
- Chili powder
- Garlic powder
- 2 pinches of salt
- 4 pinches of pepper
- 3 tbsp olive oil

Directions
- Preheat oven to 425 F
- Peel sweet potatoes then slice into less than 1/2 cm pieces. You can make then thicker for more of a soft chip or thinner for a crispier chip.
- Lay on a baking tray, making sure to not overlap. I normally use 2 trays. Sprinkle olive oil over all the potatoes.
- Generously sprinkle the chili powder and garlic powder on both sides depending on how much you prefer, I use around 3 tbsp of both. Then add pinches of salt and pinches of pepper.
- Take your sweet potatoes and massage all the spices and oils into both sides -necessary to make sure each slice is coated.
- Bake for 10-15 minutes, depends on thickness.
- Remove from oven and eat immediately. ENJOY 🙂
