Cold Weather Hacks – blogmas day 9
The next few months are some of the coldest times of the year. The forecast shows tons of snow, you wake up at 5 degrees, and there’s ice everywhere! And let’s face it, it’s a nightmare. No matter how much you love the Winter waking up in the morning only to find your car buried under a mountain of snow or encased in a lovely layer of ice is a complete nightmare. So, to combat your winter blue’s I found some awesome hacks that are perfect for the cold weather! You won’t need to worry about the icy driveway or the layer of frost on your windshield because by implementing these few tips into your day you’ll quite literally be skating around 🙂 with no issues!
Turn your ceiling fan on clockwise
During the Summer you want your ceiling fan turning counterclockwise for cooling, but during the winter it’s a different story. Switch your ceiling fan clockwise to send cool air up delivering warm air down to you!
Put screws in the soles of your shoes
Buy a pair of designated winter shoes and only wear them on icy days so you can use this hack.
Put screws in the bottom of your shoes so you won’t need to worry about slipping on the icy roads. Be sure to place the screws near the edges of the shoes and that you’re using a pair of shoes that has a thick sole.
Wear tights under your layers
Tights are a wonderful clothing item that will help ensure you’re even warmer under your layers.
By wearing a pair of tights underneath jeans or even doubling up on them if you’re wearing a skirt or dress to work will make all the difference on those 5 below days.
Insulate your windows
Insulate your windows with clear plastic that you can find at most hardware stores. This will help keep the warm air in and the cold air out! Easy removal in the spring.
Block drafts under the door
Use a door draft blocker to prevent cold air from slipping under your doorway.
But, if you’re on a budget and don’t want to spend 20+ dollars for one, use this genius hack! Cut a pipe insulator down the middle and slip it perfectly under your door!

Prevent frostbite with Vaseline and baby oil
You’ve bundled up and are all ready to head out the door but there’s a bit of skin that’s still sticking out. To protect this area from the dangers of the cold slather a bit of Vaseline or baby oil on those areas.
Attach zip ties to bike tires
If you like to bike then when the winter arrives it can be a real bummer to not be able to venture out during those cold days. But wait! In snowy conditions, you can improve the grip of your bike tires by attaching zip ties in equal intervals, giving your tires traction in the winter weather.
Crisco candle
In a pinch, you can use a jar of Crisco as a candle by simply placing a wick in the center of it! It will burn for hours and is a lot more affordable than regular candles.
